THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY OF MIDDLE EAST

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology of Middle East was established in 1992 within the Marmara University Institute of Middle Eastern Studies. The graduate programs in Sociology and Anthropology of Middle East graduated its first students in 1997.

Those who have completed four years of undergraduate education in any department of universities can apply to graduate programs in the Sociology and Anthropology of Middle East Department.

The department carries out studies in intensive cooperation with other departments within the Institute in education and research processes. In education and research activities, interdisciplinary studies are carried out with a perspective open to the accumulations in other disciplines of social sciences.

The main aim of the department is to use sociological and anthropological knowledge together in order to conduct studies that overcome the artificial boundaries between social and cultural analysis. Social and cultural problems in the Middle East and Muslim-majority countries are analyzed through the pluralistic use of methods and theories.
